Nobody knows quite what happened next. There are two distinctly different versions of the story. Some say he scooped her up and stole her away. Others insist that his vehicle came to a brief halt as he stopped to attend to a troublesome horse and, whilst he was distracted, she hid herself aboard. All we know is that she vanished from that idyllic realm and reappeared in the underworld as Persephone, Queen of Lost Souls and Dark Places. She was now the consort of Pluto and together they reigned happily over this bizarre, shadowy but perpetually fascinating place. Her mother, meanwhile, went berserk, scouring the land day and night in search of her beloved lost daughter. And as her mother was no ordinary Goddess but Demeter, Goddess of the Harvest and the Crops, this gave rise to a bit of a problem. Everything stopped growing. The Gods and mortals alike were desperate for the mystery to be solved. Eventually Hermes, the messenger, got word of Persephone's new abode and volunteered to rescue her. He went down to the Underworld and challenged Pluto. Pluto said, "You can have her back by all means. Just so long as she hasn't eaten anything while she's been down here. And as she is the daughter of a Goddess, she should have had no need of food." Hermes went to Persephone and invited her to climb aboard his horse and return to the realm above, "Whoops, sorry, I can't" said Persephone, belching in a most unladylike manner. "I appear to have just swallowed a handful of pomegranate seeds." After much negotiation between Zeus and Pluto it was agreed that from then on Persephone could spend half the year in the Underworld and half back at Mum's place. Does all this remind you of anyone? Can you think of someone who spends half their time in a rather dark, mysterious realm? And the other half basking in the light of innocence and joy?
