Do Me Internally

Under the continuing saga of my search for employment, I received a call this morning from HR at the company where I've been concentrating my efforts. They're the largest in my industry and universally praised as a great place to wor Up until said call came in, I'd been working four different opportunities there. There one in particular that I found particularly exciting and it represented a great fit for my background (same markets, customers, etc.). You know what's coming, which is they offered the role to someone else. What made this call different first, I got a call and not an automated email, and second, the message that came with it. The hiring manager specifically asked HR to reach out to let me know they wanted to make me an offer, because I the best fit, but it went to a last minute internal applicant. The individual I spoke with indicated the company prioritizes internal candidates, where they can. Indeed, one of the things I find most appealing about the company is the ability to advance in a rapid manner. The roles I've not gotten offers for all went to internal candidates as well.

As one might imagine, it's beyond frustrating to be still for gainful employment after over six months, but to hear it's not because I'm a defective asshole does offer a bit of hope. Proves I'm quite adept at concealing that part of my character during interviews. For clarification, I'd been all but offered a role a few weeks ago, but the hiring manager reached out to inform me that it would require me to relocated to Wisconsin. I politely and professionally informed him there no way in hell I trading one midwestern hell hole for another with more snow and colder temperatures.

What's the saying about adversity and strength of character?

No discount on cheese is worth moving to WI...

When up against an internal candidate, the odds just stack up against you as an external candidate. There's no way an external candidate can counter the internal support.
But hopefully you'll get that job and become internal!

When the company has a preference for internal candidates, you have to be impossibly good to beat them for a role.

I asked the HR guy whether they were actually adding head count or just shuffling people around...

We love you here in blogland! But we're too cheap (read "broke") to pay you a salary.
Bottom line...How long can you live on love?
Sorry you didn't get the job and hopefully someone will do the right thing and hire you for a position that will be a great fit!

Hmmmm....I know I left that wand around here somewhere!

Thanks for the encouragement. It'll all work out, but I'd prefer it happen sooner rather than later (as he watches his savings slowly egress).
Could always be worse, I guess, but it pisses me off coming on top of the deal with my parents. At least I have my dog, now, and she makes me smile every day.

As an HR person, I have mixed feelings about the whole "hiring internally" for a position. Yes, I think it good to promote QUALIFIED people from within. However, in the majority of my experience (actually witnessed this recently), many managers just hire from within because they're lazy. It's easier to go with the person who [presumably] knows the company or whatever than them training someone they don't know. I mean, I'm curious what they said about you questioning whether they're just shuffling people around.

I hope you find something soon!

It can be a positive for a company's culture to hire from within, whenever possible. Better morale, retention, etc. I don't think these folks were being lazy, considering the time they spent interviewing external candidates (it would be incredibly egotistical even for me to think I was the only one). One thing I think is missed by majorly slanting the decision toward internal candidates is performance in the market.

I guess it depends on what side of the equation you're on.

The shuffling question was rhetorical on my side and was taken as such.

-Yeah, you do know some of that shit is for show, right? Oh, or....ummm...I guess you didn't know. Granted...not ALL the time, but...

Yep, when I spend time and effort screening applicants, setting up interviews (1st and 2nd rounds for some), etc. only to be informed that the hiring manager already knew who they were going to promote into the role...yeah, that shit was a waste of my time. Yanno...they have to make it "look" like they're following procedures...and...oh, I don't know...the law.
