Status of upgrades to groups and friend network As you might have noticed, the much anticipated upgrades didn't go live last week. Here's what happened and the current status (for those who don't want to read the details, we are going to try to upgrade again Monday/Tuesday of this coming week)... starting with smaller sites. Both: Currently, the site displays members of groups or friend networks regardless if that member's profile is available or if they are still a member of the site. Doing this makes it easier to get a count of members (b/c we don't have to check if each is active). The new code will check to see the status of each member before showing it to you. While it's fast for small groups and networks, those with 10,000+ members bog down. Much of our work this past week was to find ways to speed this up (the way databases work, if any pages are slow, it could slow down currently fast pages). The new upgrades will let you sort groups and friends by last login, age, date joined network, handle, etc. One thing people will notice right away is that the number of friends/members shown on main pages will be different than what they see on friends/member lists. This is because the larger number is the total number of candidates and the smaller is only the number of members who have an active profile. While we put text on the page to explain things, there will be people who freak out. Group Changes: - Very large groups will automatically have activity requirements for members to be shown as active. This is helpful for groups with 100,000 "members" who don't contribute to the group as well as helps speed up the display of members. - The format of group members will also change and look more similar to search result listings (with links to view blogs, etc). Friend Network Changes: - We will only show the most recent 100 invites at a time. Some members get thousands of invites that they don't respond to. By requiring a decision on the first 100 before seeing more, members will know if their invites are accepted earlier. We will also delete invites that are older than 3 months. - One delay has been in internal debate on how friend "links" are maintained. One-way verses Two-way. Currently, if either party of a friendship removes the other from his/her list, the removed person still sees the other in his/her list. Doing this enables people to keep track of "potential" friends but can get confusing. If we break both links when either member cuts the friend link, then friends would "disappear" from the member's list. I'm personally leaning towards making this change (feedback please?) but it will not be part of this release. Friends and groups code has been around for over five years and had too many patches on patches added. Before fixing bugs and adding features, the goal is to simplify the software. This will make future improvements easier to do. We have reduced the size of the software by over 4,000 lines since this process started three weeks ago. I share member's frustration that the improvements didn't make it live last week. We just want to ensure that the upgrades will be an improvement (faster, less buggy, and more capability). I'm not only the CEO, I'm a member too... will do all I can to help get upgrades live as soon as possible. Thanks so much for your patience.  |

Personally, I'd be thrilled if the friend link would allow us to disappear from the other person's list when we decline the invitation or delete them from our own list.

Thank you for the update. Why not delete invites older than 30 days? Break both links in the friends network, it makes more sense this way. I would rather have a delay than slower, buggy updates.

On Groups: I'd love to see the 'Associate Member' disappear and instead the member be removed from the group. If a person really wants to be a member, they will rejoin. Otherwise it just clutters up the group as well as the database. On Friend Network: If one removes the link, I believe both links need to be removed. Obviously there's a reason for the termination of the link on one end, it makes no sense to keep it on the other. Keep up the good work...the new changes are definately a step in the right direction....

If a member decides to remove a member from their network of friends, how do you declare the individuals as friends? In concerns to Groups: Will these updates with the removal of 4000 lines help speed up the process of postings through the database? Majority of members are getting frustrated that their postings can and have been taking up to 72 hours to being displayed and are losing many postings that they submitted. I know over the weekend alone in my own group that at least 12 postings of mine were lost completely. I know that the postings are scanned for certain words or phrases, but for the life of me I do not understand why the affiliate sites of Various Inc. are within that scanning process when it is no mystery to the members that the sites are linked together; such as Passion, Hotmatch, Adult-Friend-Finder, etc... and if abbreviated they are edited. Just my opinion that their is unnecessary clutter in the scans of postings. Nick

I have a suggestion actually make sure people are posting questions in the advice lines and not just erotic stories. I use to enjoy the advice lines and met some wonderful folks there too but lately there isn't much except for stories. Also I vote that 99Flavors.com should have an erotic art gallery of some sort for the member's like myself who like to draw it and share it. Just my two cents from the peanut gallery Juicy

Just a note on the old invites: sometimes people are unable to really tend to their invites due to time, travel, and internet access constraints. It would be nice to still be able to have them stored for a length of time, although, personally, I feel 3 months would be sufficent. Or perhaps the time length could be an option that we could set individually?

inmho, when I remove a friend from my network, my status as friend should also be removed automatically. This is why: 1) I might accept someone as a friend and then later find they behave a way on the site in which I don't want to be associated. 2) At first, I accepted everyone who asked to be in my network because I didn't know what I was doing. A newbie has no way of understanding the ramifications of being in a friend's network. We should be able to control which networks we are in. 3) The very reason you listed as a GOOD reason to keep the second link is a BAD reason in my book! If I remove someone from my network, I certainly do not want to encourage him to be keeping tabs on me! I want all traces of my profile out of his network. He can always do a search on me if he is really interested! But to keep my pic there as a a reminder is unnecessary and only encourages him to contact me. imho, the Friends Network should be a double opt-in. If at any time one of the two opts out, there is no link between the two. Thanks for asking the question. I hope you do make this change as soon as possible.

Hi, When we first signed on, we ended up waiting 2 months before excepting any invites as we were leaning what was what. So the 60 to 90 day makes sense. Two thumbs up on the break the network on both sides. Also like to see the trash empty every 30? days on declined invites. Keep working on the speed!! Thanks, Toys

All of your changes are going to be great, but I don't think that you are addressing the biggest headache of all of us paying males. **** FAKE FEMALE PROFILES **** This would be eliminated if you did a one time member charge of $5 or $10 unless they go to silver or gold status....Then charge them nothing. This would only be charged the first time the profile was created. You would also have to make sure that credit card name and name of new member was the same.... Now this would reduce your fakes, but are you even interested in reducing your fake females????? P.S. beisides that I love 99Flavors.com.

If I delete someone from my Friends Network, I don't want to still be in theirs. Also, if the last time someone visited the site was a year or more ago, delete their profile. Wouldn't doing so be a benefit on the technical side? If I do a search, I don't want to come across profiles that haven't been logged on in the year 2006--it's five months old already--that many months of inactivity deserves/warrants deletion. One last thing, is there a way you can alert to new mail without having to click to the mailox or home page. A person can be in blog land can be there for a quite awhile and not realize that they have new mail. GossipJunkie "Dance like nobody's watching"

i just assumed that if i removed someone from my network i was removed from thiers.. silly me!! i still want blocked members stopped from SEEING my profile or blog... as i say in my blog.. it is like letting peeping toms have access to your windows, even if they can't get thru the door.. Hi LuvPump! Thanks for all the wonderful changes you've made to the site over the past couple of months, especially in the blog area. one question, I've been trying to change a friend in my network from the general category to a different one and it won't work. Is that just a sideeffect of the changes you're making, or is there another way to do it besides using the move to category button? Thanks!

Is there any chance of getting back the old function of the View All threads? The newest threads would appear at the top, not the ones to which someone has posted the most recently. This was extremely helpful. If a group is active, new threads may never appear on the front page, and may be permanently buried. The old function at least allowed us to see all of the new ones at the top so that we could post to them, and allow them to show up on the front page. Thank you.

Thank you Andrew for all your efforts. I am not computer literate like some but I know that the kind of overhaul you are taking on is no simple task. I have noticed an improvement from the dead stop the whole group system was at before; there are still some problems but there has been some progress. I hope that the newly released upgrades will further enhance the group experience. I think it is important if we all understood the capabilities of the system, we could come up with some ways to work with it. I speak for myself when I say that I am not looking for to have my wishlist addressed at this point. I just want to know what are the system capabilities.

Yes, I am working on two projects this weekend - speeding up code for groups and upgrading our anti-fake profile code. Starting this release, we are going to be much tougher on members sending personal contact info in messages (the #1 reason why scammers have fake accounts). I will make a post soon on efforts that going on and new ways we are going to get rid of these profiles. One issue it that guys send their personal emails to these accounts and the "owner" of them then feeds them to a spam list. The only way to stop them is to make it harder to give them contact info. We have to still let real members be able to get email without paying. We hate having fake profiles posted as it reduces the the community of the site. We're working hard to fight it - improvements rolled out soon Comment on the Contact Info Issue. I understand all the issues you noted, and I know the possible risk someone takes posting contact info to get more contact with a person who is an 99Flavors.com member. But I have a problem. 99Flavors.com is an Adult site, and as such is blocked by a lot of servers. I worked at a site that allowed access to my e-mail accounts and some CHAT software, but not 99Flavors.com. If I wanted to talk to someone I meet here I was out of luck. I have been a target of west African scammers, but I still want to be able to pass contact info to some people I meet here. Since I pay the extra for standard members to e-mail me here why not let me feed non-99Flavors.com contact info back to allow non-adult site access to my friends when I want? Thanks for the feedback - we have a multiple prong strategy that will be rolled out soon. We don't want to block 100% of contact info sending, just people who send it out all the time before they get to know someone.

Reason I ask is that some groups have more then 10 pages of members and when need to ban or remove a banning from a member it is quite difficult to find them through all the pages. For my group of The Likeminded Ones that I moderate over I have 14 pages of banned members alone. It would really help serious "Active Moderators" of Groups if there was a Member Handle Search as what is on the Blog section. Nick

luvpump, as someone who used to code for a living, I am glad you are taking the time to weed through the code and trim the fat. I know first hand what a nitemare patches upon patches can be. Thanks for finally being frank about what is going on. It has given me new patience. You asked for feedback about friends, I happen to agree with everyone else that once one end is gone, a link no longer exists and the other end needs to be cleaned up as well. By what many ladies have expressed, most will know well why their "friend" disappeared. From a code stand point here's a tip on double pointers. Follow the pointer BEFORE you delete it. ProfileA clicks delete on ProfileB. That's your pointer TO profile B. Follow it to open ProfileB, in *it's* friends DB search for ProfileA. Delete that link first. Then close ProfileB and delete the link in ProfileA. It *should* be cake  but I know theory and practice can be two different beasts. Best of luck to ya! -V(btw, I only recently discovered this blog. Oh yeah, one more thing. I think the Associate Member stuff is a cool idea. But there is one thing that I think would be far easier to code, and yet potentially alot more useful. That is giving moderators a link to simply REMOVE a member. Currently BAN is the only option. If a persons activity has fallen so low, moderators wish to just not see them, not have another list of clutter. And removing a member is essentially the same code as remove a friend. K.I.S.S. no?

My two cents. I say if someone doesn't want me in their network (or me want them in mine) then the tie should be cut on both ends. Another Cent: I would think that the efficient operation of this site would be highly contingent on management of the resources and constant managable hardware and software updates to improve functionality. For example; why do the Advice Line question and answer archives go all the way back to 1999??? Couldn't those computer resources be better used to make this site more efficient overall? And, couldn't the whole concept of keeping things current (say 6 months or 1 year max) make the site more pleasurable to use and easier to manage as a whole? Since this is not the Library of Congress why would any of this be kept longer than a year??? Sorry, that was 3 cents!!

HELP!Please....lol...In my group called Big Tit Lovers, the associate members list keeps going back to '1 post every 3 months'...which is ok I guess, but since this group is of a sexual nature, and I realize that people have other things to do and all, like maybe they travel for business etc, or who knows what, I dont really expect them to post once every 3 months, I like to keep it set at once every 6 months, and I have tried to change it back to '1 post every 6 months' at least three times now, and it keeps going back to '1 post every 3 months'. I will email CS about it, but I thought you might want to know about it....not sure how many others have that happening, but they might wanna check theirs too....

Andrew, It is time someone did something about MeLikeKmunch and all his other fake profiles. I am sure many wouldn't care if he blogged his way to hell, but he is ABUSING the intent of the Advice Line, and verbally abuses members that oppose him. While on the subject of the Advice Line, it is the complete shambles now. Not just the programming problems, but the misuse of many people including the above and niceguy20402. It no longer serves a real function of helping others with sex and relationship issues. A number of members have left the site entirely over this, and many more are not renewing memberships they say. I would like to see the Advice Line survive. I learned from it, and helped many as well. I would like to see a panel of members review the posts and submit only those that are legitimate. As it is now, you have a racist/sexist joker with around 200 threads, one women recently was soliciting "favors for favors", posts about incest and bestiality have come into it. muzby, livinlavalova, stealthceleb, MeLikeKmunch and now the new one Aminsexy25 ? something carrying out his nonsense. Many members have made complaints to the Abuse team about Blogs and items in the magazine that are clearly viloations of the ToU, yet nothing seems to be done. Asking for some acknowledgement that these complaints are even being heard is ignored. Does the Terms of Use exist only for the lawyers and Various Inc. and not for the members?
